Brazos Electric - RTLP Web System

Business Need:

In the Texas electricity business, it is critical for grid operators to quickly determine how many megawatts are needed for the next couple of hours, ongoing.  Unlike a commodity such as oil, excess electricity is difficult to store.  Just the right balance of power generation is required for a given amount of consumption.

Electricity providers and grid operators are faced with the following challenges:

  • • By estimating consumption too high, excess power is taken off of the grid, resulting in what equates to throwing money away.  Best case is to sell it for below market price.
  • • By estimating consumption too low, one may pay a premium to purchase more power at the last moment, which is expensive.

Therefore, accurate short-term estimation is a key required process to achieve an optimum balance and therefore maximize efficient usage.

Solution:

Brazos Electric Cooperative required a flexible tool to consolidate data from various existing sources and provide information to assist grid operators to determine and view historical consumption actuals.  They named the tool RTLP, for Real-Time Load Projection.

They required a Microsoft Based .Net solution, which could easily integrate with legacy and remote systems, seamlessly deploy, and easily upgrade over time.

Brazos and MNT discussed the options of forms and browser based solutions. After evaluation of the current system landscape, Brazos ultimately went with a browser based application system.  Their internal programmers were already VB Script experts using Excel, Access and Office System programming, so they chose VB.NET as their language of choice.

Additionally, they desired a company which could expose the internal Brazos programming staff in effective use of Microsoft .Net technologies and class based object programming.

MNT Systems worked in tandem with Brazos to design and create a web-based system to provide:

  • • Historical load reporting based on 15 minute intervals
  • • “Basis Day” queries that allow operators to search history for a day (or hour) that has similar characteristics to the current day for factors such as load, estimated load, temperature, the price of gas, etc.
  • • Future interval estimates based on past data and factors entered by the operator
  • • Dynamic charts and graphics for historical and estimated data, with basis comparison.
  • • Excel download capability
  • • And more…

MNT Systems also provided customized classroom training, as well as project planned on-the-job training in order to help Brazos Electric jumpstart their ongoing .Net initiatives.

Technology Applied

  • • VB.Net
  • • ASP.Net
  • • Oracle 8i
  • • SQL Server 2000
  • • Access 2003
  • • Third party graphing and charting components
